Caloi History

The cartoonist Carlos Loiseau, better known as Caloi, died May,08,2012

 aged 63 at a hospital after having been admitted for complications with cancer.

One of the most celebrated cartoonists in the country, Caloi was born in Salta in 1948 but spent most of his life in Buenos Aires. He has been publishing work since 1966, when he made his debut in the magazine, T'a Vicenta. In 1968 he moved to Clar'n where he became a regular contributor for over 40 years. Not stopping since his initial breakthrough, his prolific work rate saw him produce over 30 books. In 2009 he was named an Illustrious Citizen of the City of Buenos Aires.

His most recognisable character, Clemente a two-legged, bald yellow creature with black stripes on his body and a bulbous nose  has featured in Clar'n newspaper since 1973. The character made it to the small screen in 1982 and is part of the Cultural Patrimony of the City.

Tributes to the man have been coming in since his death was announced this morning. The composer Rodolfo Mederos, who worked on the music for Caloi's latest film Animate Buenos Aires, which was screened for the first time last week, praised his collaborator's spirit and work ethic. Figures like him don't die, they are a little more eternal,he said.When we worked together, he was a partner in crime, an accomplice, which is the best way to work and live.

A fellow cartoonist, Carlos Garaycochea said that he feels like, a part of me has gone, I feel like a part of me has died. 

An important part of Buenos Aires  cultural landscape, his absence will be missed across the country.
